The changing seasons can significantly impact your skin’s health as summer turns into fall.
With the change of leaves and the crisp air, it’s time to adjust your skincare routine to accommodate the seasonal transition.
………. Because your skin is the largest and most protective organ of your body!
Fall presents unique challenges for your skin.
So, how can you enjoy fall and colder weather and still protect your skin simultaneously?
To keep your complexion glowing and healthy, consider these fall tips:
1. Hydration is Key – Your skin is 65% water, and the drop in humidity and without water will become dry and tight and dramatically increase the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging.
- Switch to rich moisturizers and serums to lock in moisture to improve skin & maintain a 5pH.
- Drinking enough water is always…… a simple skincare solution year-round.
2. Invest in a Humidifier – Knowing your skin is your first line of defense…. to do its job…… it needs to be hydrated. The indoor heating system is very drying.
- And going back and forth between the two types of air can aggravate any skin condition.
- A humidifier adds moisture to the air to help your skin retain hydration and avoid dryness, itchiness, and static electricity.
3. Always Wear Sunscreen – Sunscreen is NOT just for summer! Damaging UV rays ARE present year-round. Opt for an SPF 30 or higher…… to protect your skin from:
- premature aging,
- hyper-pigmentation, and even
- skin cancer.
Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every couple of hours while enjoying the great outdoors!
4. Exfoliate Gently – Avoid drying soaps and cleansers… however…… to combat dullness and buildup of dead skin cells, exfoliate your skin 1-2 times a week…… with a gentle exfoliate.
- Avoid chemical exfoliants with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs).
5. Moisturize Your Whole Body – In addition to your complexion………. moisturize the rest of your body. Pay attention to thin-skin areas such as your hands, feet, and elbows.
- To lock in the moisture, apply immediately after showering when your skin is damp and massage into your skin…… to HYDRATE. Speaking of ……
6. Avoid Hot Showers and Baths – As good as that sounds, dry cold air aggravates skin issues such as eczema.
Long hot showers will only dry out the skin more and strip your skin of essential oils:
- causing cracks,
- redness, and
- discomfort.
Use warm water and limit your time. Just turn the time and heat down a notch.
7. Aid Antioxidants – Antioxidant-rich serums and creams help protect your skin from environmental damage.
- Look for products containing vitamins C and E to boost your skin’s resilience!
8. Don’t Forget Your Lips– Who doesn’t get chapped lips in the fall? Beware of waxy types of lip balms.
- Look for hydrating ingredients like shea butter or coconut oil to keep your lips soft and smooth.
Lastly…...
9. Consult a Dermatologist – I always see my Dermatologist annually in the fall.
- If you have any specific skin conditions or concerns, consider consulting a dermatologist for personalized treatment tailored to your needs.
