Start where your are, Your August Wellness Reset—August is National Wellness Month. Office for the Aging
A wonderful reminder that wellness isn’t a destination; it’s a way of living.
Every small choice we make to care for our mind, body, and spirit moves us one step closer to thriving in every decade of life.
Making this the perfect time to pause and ask:
How well am I caring for myself—mind, body, and spirit?
When we hear the word wellness, we often think about diet, exercise, or the number on the scale. But true wellness is so much more than that.
Wellness is not about being perfect.
It is not about following a rigid program, changing everything overnight, or adding more pressure to an already busy life.
Wellness is about becoming more aware of what you need and making small choices that help you feel stronger, calmer, healthier, and more connected to your life.
🌈 The Seven Areas of Wellness
I like to look at wellness through seven interconnected areas:
🧠 Mental and Emotional Wellness
How we manage stress, process emotions, continue learning, and speak to ourselves.
💪 Physical Wellness
How we nourish, move, rest, hydrate, and care for our bodies.
🤝 Social Wellness
The relationships, friendships, and communities that help us feel supported and connected.
💰 Financial Wellness
How we manage our resources and create greater confidence and peace around money.
🙏 Spiritual Wellness
The values, beliefs, gratitude, faith, and sense of meaning that guide us.
6🏡 Environmental Wellness
The spaces where we live and work—and whether they help us feel safe, comfortable, and at ease.
7🌟 Vocational and Purpose Wellness
The ways we use our gifts, experience personal growth, contribute to others, and continue finding purpose in every decade.
These areas do not need to be perfectly balanced every day. “Life” simply does not work that way!
Sometimes our physical health needs more attention. At other times, we may need emotional rest, stronger boundaries, financial clarity, meaningful friendships, or a renewed sense of purpose.
The goal is not perfect balance. The goal is awareness, flexibility, and a willingness to adjust.
That is AGE-GILITY!
🌻 Start Where You Are
National Wellness Month is a wonderful opportunity to choose one small habit that supports your well-being.
You might:
💧 Drink an extra glass or two of water.
🥗 Add more colorful fruits and vegetables to your meals.
😴 Create a calming bedtime routine.
🚶 Take a ten-minute walk.
💃 Turn on your favorite music and dance.
🧘 Practice yoga, stretching, meditation, or deep breathing.
☀️ Step outside for fresh air and a little morning sunshine.
📱 Take a break from social media and give your mind some quiet time.
☎️ Call someone who makes you smile.
🧹 Clear one small area of clutter so your home can breathe—and so can you.
You do not have to do all of these things.
Choose the one that feels realistic for your life right now.
Small choices practiced consistently can become healthy routines. Healthy routines can become a lifestyle.
💛 Dare to Be Seen and Heard
Several years ago, I attended a coaching retreat in San Diego with the theme:
“Dare to Be Seen and Heard.” https://michelerase.com/tuesday-truths-august-is-national-wellness-month/
That message has stayed with me.
At the time, I was learning to move through my fear of putting myself out there. I was discovering my voice, developing my coaching programs, and deciding how I wanted to serve others.
Today, I can see how that experience helped prepare me for everything that followed—speaking, creating my signature programs, joining Toastmasters, publishing five books, and continuing to grow into my role as an AGE-GILITY Vibrancy Specialist.
Wellness includes allowing ourselves to evolve.
It includes being brave enough to try something new, change direction, use our voices, and discover new passions in the next chapter of life.
We are never too old to grow.
We are never too old to learn.
🧭 My Five Steps for Lasting Change
Over the years, my approach has become gentler and more flexible.
I believe it begins with five simple steps:
- Mindset: Believing that change is possible.
- Acceptance: Honestly recognizing where you are today.
- Ownership: Understanding that you have choices, even when you cannot control every circumstance.
- Enlightenment: Learning what supports your body, your goals, and your life.
- Action: Taking one realistic step—and continuing to flow forward.
That is how lasting transformation begins.
Not with punishment.
Not with perfection.
But with awareness, compassion, and ACTION.
🌿 Your August Wellness Challenge
For the rest of August, choose one area of wellness that needs a little more attention.
Ask yourself:
What is one small thing I can do today that my future self will thank me for?
Then do it again tomorrow.
Wellness is not simply a state of health. It is the way we choose to live, care for ourselves, and remain engaged with our lives.
💬 Tuesday Truth:
Improving your wellness does not require reinventing your entire life.
Start where you are, choose one supportive habit, and allow each small step to move you forward.
Instead of merely surviving our next decade, let us continue THRIVING with AGE-GILITY!
Which area of wellness will you focus on this August?
Share it in the comments—and please share this message with someone who may need a gentle reminder to care for themselves, too.
“Wellness encompasses a healthy body, a sound mind, and a tranquil spirit. Enjoy the journey as you strive for wellness.”
