We could celebrate a National Something Day just about every day of the year.
To celebrate National Peanut Butter Day tomorrow, I’ll share some healthy, fun & surprising facts about this lunchtime favorite.
I found”6 Fun Facts of Peanut Butter” from Fooducate.
Fooducate is a FUN app you can download for free. It can track the foods you eat and your daily activities.
I don’t like to buy processed foods, but if I do, I can scan the package item’s bar code to give you a letter grade (A-D) explaining its benefits or lack thereof.
Apps are a great reference; however, they should not serve as substitutes for reading the Nutritional Facts label.
Just a historical fact, peanut butter was first patented in 1884 in Canada by a pharmacist Marcellus Gilmore Edison.
Whether you make a smoothie with almond milk and banana, spread it between slices of toasted bread with tart fruit jam, or slather on a crisp celery stalk, peanut butter is an extremely popular food.
I extended the article to include the healthy facts!
Here are “10” Fun & Healthy Facts:
- Nine out of Ten Americans eat peanut butter—The average American consumes 3 pounds a year. That’s 800 million pounds of peanut butter! On any given day, 75% percent of homes in the United States will have a peanut butter jar in the pantry or fridge.
- Despite the name, peanuts are not nuts—They’re technically legumes in the bean family. Peanuts are a new world food, most likely originating in Brazil and migrating north to Mexico. Evidence suggests the Aztecs mashed them into a paste as recently as 500 years ago.
- Sixty percent of the peanuts are grown in the southeastern United States, in Georgia, Florida, and Alabama, half of which are then processed into peanut butter. One acre yields enough peanuts for the preparation of 30,000 peanut butter & jelly sandwiches.
- Peanuts are rich in healthy monounsaturated fats – They can help reduce the risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol.
- Peanut butter is a good source of protein—Every serving provides 8 grams, or about 16% percent of the recommended daily value. While a single 2-tablespoon serving of peanut butter has 190 calories which may seem high, the healthy combination of protein and fats will keep you satiated for a more extended period than low-calorie snacks made of refined carbohydrates and sugars.
- Peanut Butter is loaded with many excellent and health-promoting nutrients for boosting heart health! – Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), Niacin, Magnesium, Vitamin E, and B-6.
- Weight Loss (in moderation) – controls appetite. The protein, fat, and fiber content improve the feeling of fullness. A 2018 study with over 373,000 from 10 European counties over five years suggests that eating nuts reduces a person’s risk of being overweight or obese.
- Eating Peanut Butter can give you Gorgeous Skin and Hair. – It contains Biotin, a Vitamin B for healthy hair and scalp. Also, Vitamin E nourishes the skin and protects it from damaging UV rays.
- Better Management of Type 2 Diabetes – low-carb snack. Naturally, low carbs can prevent blood sugar spikes.
- “Arachibutyrophobia” is the fear of getting peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth. Sure, it may be sticky, but boy, is it delicious!
Other tasty ideas to incorporate this healthy spread into your eating habits besides a PB & J sandwich.
