Tuesday Truths – “What’s Your WHY?
July 26, 2022
STORY: We all have our own story. Sometimes (most times), I feel people wonder, “WHY” am I doing this? Why am I bothering to study to get new certifications when I could be just relaxing & let life happen. I’ll be back to this.
Having a “WHY” is your purpose…. that differentiates YOU……… in WHAT we do, HOW you do it, and WHY you do it. It makes you unique compared to the rest of the crowd.
Your personal “WHY” will set you apart from everyone else. And a strong WHY is the KEY to staying motivated and focused.
That purpose gives you momentum to take ACTION on whatever you are passionate about… while inspiring others to impact their lives.
According to Stephen Warley, who authors “Life Skills that Matter,” if you are feeling STUCK in your career or life, it’s because you have NO momentum to move your life forward.
Last week I talked about “leaning in” to your fears to take ACTION when you are stuck. According to Mr. Warley, “you may feel stuck because it might be the first time in your life you recognize your desire for something more that you have been doing.”
Another way to get out of your “stuckness” is finding your “WHY.” Your “WHY” comes from deep within you. It is a statement of purpose that describes why you do the work you do and why you live the lifestyle:
- It is your calling.
- It’s your convection.
- It is your mission statement.
- It is a vision of your life and work.
- It is a tread of your career story.
- It is a core source of motivation.
- It defines who you are and what makes you productive.
- It is the reason for your “LIFE’S” work. AND THIS SPECIALLY INCLUDES AFTER YOUR RETIREMENT!
Your “WHY” provides stability and direction in the craziness of life. It makes you grow by giving you the courage and resilience to pivot through the decades of your life with “AGE-GILITY!”
How do you find your “WHY?” It’s hidden in your thoughts, feeling, behaviors and habits. So it would help to practice self-awareness daily by journaling those thoughts and actions.
Start by asking yourself these questions:
- Why do I do this?
- Why do I value this over that?
- Why am I not happy when X happens?
- Why am I stressed now?
Typical answers to these questions are often a variation of:
- Providing for a family
- Success
- To leave a legacy
- Feeling loved
- Having a positive impact on the lives of others
Multiple studies have found having a “WHY” aligned with your LIFE’S PURPOSE, you will live a happier and more productive life.
Make it a priority to find your purpose, the “WHY” that drives your life, and you may find more happiness and serenity.
- It will help you stay focused on what matters most in your life.
- It will clarify who you are and what you want to achieve.
- Having a purpose will drive your passion for committing to reaching your true potential.
After retiring from dental hygiene practice, I had a massive hole in my heart and PURPOSE as a preventive health care professional. During the COVID shutdown, I used my passion for serving others and committed to my new purpose for the next decade of my life.
The first thing I did was write my mission statement, my “WHY.” So here it is, and I continue to work on it!
